Roane County Criminal Court Records
Roane County court records require a state and court match. Tennessee’s criminal and General Sessions divisions and West Virginia’s court directory are different official routes.
Resolve the state before searching the county
Roane County alone is not enough to choose a criminal-record custodian. Tennessee and West Virginia both have official Roane County court offices. These are two documented routes, not a claim to resolve every place or record with that name. Start with the state, court, defendant’s name, case or citation number, and approximate filing date on the original notice. Do not choose a state solely from where someone lives now.
Also distinguish the document wanted: a docket identifies proceedings, a judgment or dismissal records an outcome, and a police arrest or jail booking belongs to a different record system. Tennessee: separate Criminal Court and General Sessions
The Roane County, Tennessee Circuit Court Clerk maintains Circuit, Criminal, General Sessions, Juvenile, Traffic, and Collections divisions. The county government directs readers to the Roane Courts website. Its Circuit and Criminal Courts page links the Public Court Records System through Search Now. Use that official link, select the relevant division if offered, and retain the complete case reference from the result.
Criminal Court handles felony and misdemeanor cases, including matters originating in grand-jury indictments or General Sessions probable-cause hearings. Consequently, an earlier General Sessions entry and a later Criminal Court file may describe different stages. Check both references when the paperwork shows a transfer rather than assuming an old docket is the final disposition.
Tennessee: contact the division holding the file

General Sessions uses 865-376-5584 and Suite 16 at the same street address. Specify the defendant, case number, approximate year, and the particular judgment, dismissal, or other document requested.
Ask whether the requested file is public, whether a plain or certified copy is available, how payment and delivery work, and what the complete charge will be. The division pages reviewed do not establish one copy price or processing time for every criminal-record request. Do not confuse a case-filing or court-cost schedule with a quoted copy order. If the portal is missing a file, give the clerk the original case reference.
West Virginia: use the magistrate search for magistrate cases
The West Virginia Judiciary’s Magistrate Record Search links to MCRSearch. It is free and accepts a first name, last name, or case number, returning up to 30 records. A common name can therefore require a narrower search. Confirm Roane County and the case reference in the result before contacting an office. This tool is for magistrate information; it is not a replacement for a circuit-court inquiry.
The judiciary expressly says the court documents themselves are not online in this search. Obtain specific copies by calling or visiting the magistrate clerk in the filing county; a fee required by law applies. For Roane County, the directory lists the Magistrate Clerk at 208 Court Street, Spencer, WV 25276, telephone 304-927-4750. Ask for the current copy and certification total rather than assuming that a free search means free documents.
West Virginia: request circuit records from the circuit clerk
For a Roane County, West Virginia circuit case, the judiciary directory lists the Circuit Clerk at Roane County Courthouse, P.O. Box 122, 200 Main Street, Spencer, WV 25276, telephone 304-927-2750. Use that office for the circuit file and identify its case number and required filing. The separate family-court and magistrate contacts in the same directory do not make their records interchangeable.
Confirm available request methods, copy form, charges, and delivery before submitting payment or traveling. The directory is a contact source, not a guarantee that any named person has a case or that every file is available remotely. An absent magistrate result cannot clear someone of a circuit matter.
Verify the outcome and resolve a mismatch
Read the requested order alongside the docket and note the court, case number, filing date, and disposition date. If the copy shows a different person, stop combining it with the original lead. If an entry appears wrong or a disposition is missing, ask the clerk holding that file how to request review and provide the precise document reference. Do not ask a Tennessee clerk to correct West Virginia data, or vice versa.
For a recipient requiring an official result, ask about certification before accepting a screenshot. If access is restricted, ask the clerk what lawful authorization or court process is needed; the existence of an index entry does not remove the restriction. Keep the clerk’s response and scope with the result rather than representing this two-state routing guide as a statewide or national background clearance.
